Wedding Planner vs. Day-of Coordinator: Which Do You Need?

Couples often use the terms wedding planner and day-of coordinator interchangeably, but the services are quite different in scope, timing and cost.

Full-Service Wedding Planning

A full-service organizer joins you at the beginning, often 9 to 18 months before the wedding. They help set the budget, select the venue, hire vendors, design the decor, manage invitations and guest lists, and handle every detail until the wedding day.

Best for: busy couples, large weddings, destination events, or anyone who wants minimal stress.

Partial Planning

Partial planning sits in the middle. You might have already booked a venue or photographer, and the organizer steps in to fill gaps, manage remaining vendors and build the timeline.

Day-of Coordination

A day-of coordinator typically begins one to two months before the wedding. They review your plans, confirm vendors, create the run-sheet and manage the event itself. They do not usually help with early decisions.

Best for: couples who enjoy planning but do not want to run their own wedding.

How to Decide

  • How much time do you have to plan?
  • How comfortable are you negotiating with vendors?
  • How large and complex is the event?
  • What is your budget for planning services?

If you are unsure, start with a consultation. Many organizers will recommend the right level of service for your situation.
